About This Lesson

In this lesson on non-violent activism, students will be able to: describe a non-violent campaign for social, political, or cultural change; compare and contrast campaign that advocates non-violence versus violence; analyze the tactics of non-violent protests; compare the approach of the Irish Republican Army to the U.S. Civil Rights Movement; reflect on the legacy of John Lewis as a leader and advocate for non-violent social change. This lesson plan was produced by New York State United Teachers in partnership with the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights. Aligned with NYS Common Core Learning Standards.
